Land use can be described as the management or modification of the natural environment into a built environment that provides residents with a high quality of life while allowing for economic development. Types of land use can include housing, industrial uses, commercial uses, recreational uses, or protection of natural lands.
Changing lands from their natural state to more intense uses can have negative impacts on the natural environment and ecosystems when the uses alter elements such as, water, soils, nutrients, plants, and animals. By implementing zoning and other types of regulations, Cities can manage these changes in land use within their jurisdictions. It is with this intent that the City of Puyallup works with citizens to make strategic planning decisions, in order to establish a city that is economically and environmentally vibrant.
